What is facebook good for?

DJ Brace is an old friend of mine, we used to sk8 together back in high school – we’d crank the hip hop and drive around looking for places to sk8, or parties to crash. Drank OE’s together. That old skool kind of shit. I just reconnected with him on facebook and had a AH HA! moment of “this is what facebook is really great for”. Over and above his amazing music career, he’s also a well branded individual. Even his website rocks it.

Brace has had a diverse DJ career that began over 10 years ago and features many highlights as a turntablist, producer and DJ instructor. DJ Brace has won numerous turntablist battles, including the DMC Canadian Championship in 2004 and placing 8th in the world. In 2005 Brace released a self titled LP entitled Soundbarriers, with legend-prairie rapper Gruf. Brace’s music can also be heard on the Fox TV hit Prison Break. Brace has also scored music for the CBC. Debut solo album, Nostomania, won a Juno for Best Instrumental album of 2009. Summer 2009 a 12″ Vinyl was released on ESL Music, with a Brace remix. Has DJ’d for Roxanne Shante. Brace currently resides in Montreal where he is actively composing and recording in the studio working on his solo material, collaborating with rap group Brown Bag AllStars, Ancient Astronauts, Microthol and Birdapres.

If you love music (especially DJ’s) and haven’t heard of this guy, you have to check out his site or find him on facebook!

Music Philosophy posters

A great little site with some silk screened posters featuring quotes from musician’s songs.
One of my favorites is this Beatles quote.

Ads of the world – Folk Festival

A great compilation of ads from around the world – I thought I’d do a search for Winnipeg to see if any good local work was featured and they have the Winnipeg Folk Festival campaign listed which was done at Relish in 2007. I had the pleasure of rebuilding the Folk Festival’s website that year while working at Relish. I’ve always been a fan of the Winnipeg Folk Festival and it was a fun client to work with. Unfortunately the ads of the world site lists Relish as being in the USA when it’s actually a Canadian company so I assume not all their facts have been checked… Other than a few errors in country, they do have a great list of well designed ads – print, web, or video.
Advertising Agency: Relish Design Studio

Chic Gamine contributes music to support non-profit

Chic Gamine is a local Winnipeg band who have been getting very popular in the last few years. I had the pleasure of working with them as one of Relish’s clients when I worked there over the last few years. They’ve recently released a new album, City City which sounds amazing. They have agreed to let a non-profit organization called GO! (Growing Opportunities International) use one of their tracks, called Before it’s too late, in a promotional video that my students are currently working on as a new media project. This is a shout out to thank Chic Gamine for caring about non-profits and creating sustainable projects to communities worldwide!
